This is a contemporary outdoor space for relaxation and entertainment. The garden is south facing, providing a sunny aspect during the day. We raised the planting behind rendered walls and built in some benches, bringing the plants nearer to the eye and hand and adding levels within a relatively small area.
The decking and benches are made from yellow bulau hardwood. We only use timber obtained from a sustainable source and that has full Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.
Planting is minimal and contemporary with lighting throughout for dramatic evening effect. The main focal point is the green wall water feature. On a hot day the colour and sound provides a cooling, refreshing effect; at night, the underlit stainless steel spout creates magical drama.
This garden is low maintenance; all the planting has been done through weed-suppressant membrane, which lets water through and stops it from evaporating. This prevents weeds from taking hold and also keeps moisture in the soil during dry spells. The owners can go away on holiday and the garden should still be growing on their return, even during a heatwave! Small pebbles are mulched over the membrane, adding background texture to the geometry of the plants.
Planting includes
Sumach Tree (Rhus typhina)
Golden Bamboo (phyllostachys aurea)
Variegated Japanese Sedge (Carex hachijoensis ‘Evergold’)
